Rotating Power Outages

A rotating outage is a planned, temporary interruption to electricity service that affects different areas for short periods of time. These outages help protect the overall electricity system and reduce the risk of longer, widespread power interruptions.

How Rotating Outages Work

  • Power is temporarily turned off in one neighbourhood or community.
  • That area is restored after a short outage and another area is taken offline.
  • This continues until NL Hydro advises that rotating outages are no longer required.
  • We will work to keep each outage as short as possible and to distribute the impact as fairly as we can across customers.

Because conditions can change quickly, we are not able to provide advance notice of when an outage will occur. We target outage durations of 60 minutes or less.

We will share updates as they become available, including how long rotating outages are expected to last, if that information is known.

How You Can Prepare

Rotating outages are designed to be brief, but a few simple steps can help you stay ready:

  • Keep phones and essential devices charged.
  • Have flashlights or battery-powered lights on hand.
  • Stay informed through our website and social media channels.
