Conservation for Your Home

During a call for conservation, there are a number of things you need to do! Customer demand for energy is at its highest during the winter months. Knowing how your home uses energy and following these tips will help you do your part to conserve electricity, if required.

When there is a call for conservation, here's what you need to do:

  1. Reduce heat:
    • turn back your electric heat by 3-5°c;
    • turn down heat in unused areas of your house; and,
    • close doors.

  2. Avoid using hot water, appliances and electronics:
    • reduce the use of your clothes washer and dishwasher;
    • delay using large appliances like the clothes dryer or oven;
    • unplug appliances that are not necessary (secondary refrigerator, coffee machine, dehumidifier); and,
    • disconnect power to unused electronic devices (stereos, computers, video game consoles, TVs).

  3. Turn off lighting:
    • switch off outside lights; and,
    • when you leave a room, turn off the lights in that room.
When taking action to reduce your electricity use, it’s important to keep safety top of mind.
