Newfoundland Power has been an active member of the community for over 135 years. The Company and its employees are honored to receive a number of awards and recognition from organizations from a variety of disciplines.
Newfoundland Power was honoured to receive the 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Award in the Business/Industry Leader category at an award ceremony in St. John’s on June 5, 2015.
“As a Company, we are committed to operating our day-to-day activities in an environmentally responsible manner,” says John Curran, Director, Safety and Environment. “Environmental awareness, diligence and management are a part of our normal business operations at Newfoundland Power, along with our long-term dedication to health and safety, our environment and our community.
“This award is a tribute to our employees’ continued dedication to making a difference to the environment,” said Gary Murray, Vice-President of Operations. “We have been celebrating our environment for over 18 years through our EnviroFest events, held annually across the island. We have partnered with more than 300 community groups and schools, and completed approximately 85 environmental projects across the province. These positive impacts are being felt today and will continue to impact future generations.”
The award is in recognition of our comprehensive Environmental Commitment Program, energy conservation initiatives and employee-driven community environmental events and partnerships including EnviroFest, Fish Friends, Tree Canada, composting, clean-ups and much more.
COMMITTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT!
Newfoundland Power was recognized with the 2011 Environmental Achievement Award at the 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association (NLCA) Chairman’s Ball and Awards Gala, held March 3, 2012, at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.
The award is presented annually in recognition of those who exhibit exceptional involvement in environmental enhancement or stewardship activities through sound environmental and conservation management practices.
In addition to Newfoundland Power’s history of hosting EnviroFest activities in 8 locations across the island each year, the Company’s involvement in sustainable projects as well as our commitment to energy conservation and remaining compliant with the ISO14001 Environment Management System all contributed to Newfoundland Power being recognized with this award.
Sean LaCour, Manager, Operations with Newfoundland Power, accepted the award on behalf of the Company from Wanda Green representing the NLCA. “Protecting the environment is well entrenched in our culture and we are proud of our environmental programs and stewardship activities,” he said. “This award demonstrates our commitment to the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.”
Newfoundland Power has received the Environmental Performance Award from the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA), making this the Company's 9th environmental award in 9 years. This latest award honours the Company for moving beyond environmental compliance and demonstrating a commitment to improved environmental performance.
“We are very mindful of the need to incorporate environmental issues into our decision making in order to meet both present operational needs and prudent long-term environmental management,” said Earl Ludlow, President and Chief Executive Officer, Newfoundland Power Inc. “We feel extremely good about the work we are doing to promote environmental awareness and protection within our Company and communities, and it is very encouraging to be recognized with this award.”
The Company has an Environmental Management System consistent with internationally recognized environmental standards for the operations of the Company (ISO 14001), and consistently performs well in annual environmental audits.
“Newfoundland Power and its employees are committed to minimizing the impact of its business on the environment and promoting environmental awareness within the communities it serves,” added Ludlow. “We believe that environmental management is the responsibility of all employees, and we ensure environmental awareness, diligence and management is an integral part of our operations.”
Newfoundland Power received the 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Award in the Business category. The award is in recognition of the Company's comprehensive Environmental Management System and employee-driven community environmental programs, including EnviroFest, Fish Friends, Tree Canada, composting, clean-ups and much more.

The Newfoundland Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) presented Newfoundland Power with its 2004 Environmental Performance Award.

In 2003 Newfoundland Power received an Award of Excellence in Environmental Education from the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM). The EECOM awards are designed to recognize excellence in environmental education in seven categories, including Outstanding Private Company, which Newfoundland Power was awarded.

Each year employees organize events aimed at helping safeguard the environment, such as Christmas tree mulching, roadside clean-ups, Tree Canada plantings and EnviroFest, an annual celebration which brings together community partners for environmental education and fun.
