Fish fry set free

Elementary students across the island set thousands of Atlantic salmon fry free into rivers throughout Newfoundland during the week of June 14, as part of the Atlantic Salmon Federation's (ASF) Fish Friends education program.  Newfoundland Power has been a major partner with this program through hands-on and financial support for the past 13 years.

Over the past few months, students have cared for salmon eggs in their classrooms, monitoring water quality and tempersature, feeding the fry, and cleaning their aquariums.  Teachers used an accompanying curriculum during their time to teach children about fish habitat, bio-diversity, life cycles, adaptation, freshwater ecology and environmental stewardship.

"Our support enables ASF to bring this program to over 60 schools throughout Newfoundland," says Bob Pike, Chair, Environmental Commitment Program.  "Our partnership adds tremendous value in educating children about the importance of preserving our environment.  Many thanks to all of our Enviornmental Coordinators who lend their hands-on support to this program each year."
