High Performance Thermostats

Thermostats are a very important part of your heating system. These devices are designed to respond to changes in room temperature and signal the heaters on and off thus maintaining a consistent and comfortable temperature in your home. The effectiveness of your heating system is only as good as the thermostats you use!

Many homes have poor quality thermostats and as a result room temperatures may vary up to 10°C from the thermostat setting. Upgrading the thermostats in your home is a small investment to increase the comfort of your home.

If you are frequently turning your heat up or down to obtain a comfortable room temperature, your thermostats may need to be replaced with high performance thermostats.

To obtain the maximum in comfort, convenience and economy from your heating system, install only electronic, low voltage or high performance wall-mounted thermostats. Thermostats mounted in the heater are generally not accurate and will not maintain reasonable comfort. They should only be used if the installation of a wall-mounted thermostat is not possible. Remember, poor quality or malfunctioning thermostats will reduce the performance of even the best heating system. High performance thermostats are your ticket to a more comfortable, electrically heated home. They easily out-perform standard wall-mounted thermostats found in most homes.

Programmable thermostats will help save energy and money. These thermostats can be programmed to automatically raise or lower temperature settings based on your lifestyle. They can reduce temperatures when you are sleeping or when your home is unoccupied, and warm your home before you get up in the morning or arrive home later in the day.

The location of thermostats in your home is also an important consideration.

Ensure thermostats are:

Installed on inside walls away from heat sources such as appliances, lamps, and direct sunlight, and also away from areas that may be affected by cold drafts such as windows and exterior doors. Thermostats installed close to heat sources may cause the heater to be turned off before the room is heated. Thermostats installed close to cold drafts will cause the heater to stay on even after the room is heated.

Installed near the entrance of the room. This will make it easier and more convenient for you to adjust as you enter or exit the room.

A thermostat should never be relied upon as a disconnect switch.

If you plan to complete electrical work on a heater or if you want to ensure the heater does not turn on in an unused area or while you are away for an extended period, the heater should be turned off by removing the fuses or switching off the breaker in the electrical panel. Many thermostats do not have an “off” setting and will turn the heater on if the room temperature drops below 5 or 10 degrees Celsius.
