Low Cost

Heating

  • Caulk and weather strip around doors, windows, and attic hatches.
  • Caulk around chimneys and along the edge of shared walls.
  • Use foam gaskets under electric switches and outlets.
  • If you don't have storm or thermal windows, cover the inside of your windows tightly with plastic or purchase a window kit.
  • Seal cracks in walls and windows.
  • Install high performance thermostats to control the temperature in your home by +/- 1 degree Celsuis.

Water Heating

  • Install energy efficient showerheads in your bathrooms.
  • Attach low-flow aerators to kitchen and bathroom faucets.
  • Repair leaking faucets.
  • Insulate hot water pipes with pipe insulation.

Lighting

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents.
  • Use light dimmers whenever possible to reduce lighting intensity, increase the life of the bulbs and save energy (do not use dimmers on compact fluorescent bulbs).
  • Use photo electric cells or timers on indoor and outdoor safety lighting.

Appliances

Cooking

  • Seek alternate cooking sources such as a pressure cooker, toaster oven or microwave oven. Smaller appliances generally use less energy.
