Heating
- Caulk and weather strip around doors, windows, and attic hatches.
- Caulk around chimneys and along the edge of shared walls.
- Use foam gaskets under electric switches and outlets.
- If you don't have storm or thermal windows, cover the inside of your windows tightly with plastic or purchase a window kit.
- Seal cracks in walls and windows.
- Install high performance thermostats to control the temperature in your home by +/- 1 degree Celsuis.
Water Heating
- Install energy efficient showerheads in your bathrooms.
- Attach low-flow aerators to kitchen and bathroom faucets.
- Repair leaking faucets.
- Insulate hot water pipes with pipe insulation.
Lighting
- Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents.
- Use light dimmers whenever possible to reduce lighting intensity, increase the life of the bulbs and save energy (do not use dimmers on compact fluorescent bulbs).
- Use photo electric cells or timers on indoor and outdoor safety lighting.
Appliances
Cooking
- Seek alternate cooking sources such as a pressure cooker, toaster oven or microwave oven. Smaller appliances generally use less energy.
