No Cost
- Turn off lights in rooms not being used.
- Use task lighting - higher wattage for tasks such as reading and lower wattage for general lighting such as watching television.
- Use natural light whenever you can.
- Use lamp shades with white or light colored liners to reflect more light.
Low Cost
- Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents.
- Use light dimmers whenever possible to reduce lighting intensity, increase the life of the bulbs and save energy (do not use dimmers on compact fluorescent bulbs).
- Use photo electric cells or timers on indoor and outdoor safety lighting.
Investment with Payback
- If installing or replacing recessed lighting fixtures, consider airtight fixtures that reduce or eliminate air leakage and loss of cooled or heated air.
