Heating

No Cost

  • Set back your thermostat at night or when you are away from home.
  • Keep curtains open during the day to let the sun’s warmth in. Close at night.
  • Use kitchen and bathroom fans sparingly. You can exhaust a houseful of heat in 2-3 hours using ventilation fans.
  • Close the flue damper on your wood burning fireplace when it’s not in use.
  • Remove window air conditioning units in winter to reduce drafts or cover all sides of the unit to minimize leakage.

Low Cost

  • Caulk and weather strip around doors, windows, and attic hatches.
  • Caulk around chimneys and along the edge of shared walls.
  • Use foam gaskets under electric switches and outlets.
  • If you don't have storm or thermal windows, cover the inside of your windows tightly with plastic or purchase a window kit.
  • Seal cracks in walls and windows.
  • Install high performance thermostats to control the temperature in your home by +/- 1 degree Celsuis.

Investment with Payback

  • Insulate areas in your home that are not insulated.
  • Upgrade insulation in areas where insulation levels are not to standard.
  • Install the correct heater sizes for each room in your house.
  • Install “programmable” thermostats to automatically set back temperature when you are not at home.
  • Build an energy efficient home.
